This five-CD set covers Jimmy Martin's complete recorded output from 1954 until 1974, 20 years and 146 tracks cut primarily for Decca-MCA, with a handful for RCA at the very outset. Disc One covers the early days, from his sides with the Osborne Brothers to his formation of a band of his own -- once Martin gets people like banjo man J.D. Crowe and fiddler Gordon Terry, the sound tightens up and gets smoother, and Martin's singing grows in power and confidence. Disc Two represents Martin and the Sunny Mountain Boys at their peak, at least in the studio -- these tracks display a range of singing, emotion, and restrained instrumental virtuosity that are almost overpowering. By that time, Martin had managed to incorporate the best components of Nashville's "countrypolitan" sound into his bluegrass work, and was reaping rewards both musical and financial. Disc Three is a direct continuation, with a growing body of fare that country-rock bands would later pick up from Martin and others. Disc Four, gets into the middle/late '60s, when Martin's music achieved an incredibly high level of dexterity. His fourth distinct lineup of Sunny Mountain Boys are as good as any but the originals; different, with a more brittle, dexterous approach. This disc is dominated by the 1966 instrumental album Big and Country Music; as it will probably never be issued as a CD, this material alone may justify the purchase of this box. Disc Five goes into the mid-1970s, when Martin had a more obviously smooth and commercial sound than his earlier work -- the music is more sentimental and a little less impressive technically, but still worth hearing. The sound is all high quality, and the essay by Chris Skinker and the discography are impressive in their own right. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide

Suicide and Euthanasia - 1 of 3 - Dr. Tommy Mitchell

Rocky Mountain Creation Fellowship was privileged to have as their February 9, 2007 speaker, Dr. Tommy Mitchell. Dr. Mitchell is a staff speaker with Answers in Genesis (www.AnswersInGenesis.Org). Dr. Mitchell spoke on Suicide and Euthanasia and what the Bible teaches about these topics. But what does the Bible say about assisted suicide (Ed. Note these words people use seem to me to be a contradiction in terms). Is it ok to help someone to kill themselves if they are in great pain or have no life at all in a vegetable state? Where do Christians stand on these topics? What does the Bible say about them. This topic is very personal to Dr. Mitchell as he had to deal with them during his medical career. Dr. Mitchell graduated with a BA with highest honors from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1980 with a major in Cell Biology and a minor in Biochemistry. For his superior scholarship during his undergraduate study, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa Society (the oldest and one of the most-respected honor societies in America). Dr. Mitchell subsequently attended Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, where he was granted an MD degree in 1984. Dr. Mitchell's residency was completed at Vanderbilt University Affiliated Hospitals in 1987. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, with a medical practice in Gallatin, Tennessee (the city of his birth, by the way). In 1991, he was elected to the Fellowship in the American College of Physicians (FACP). Dr ...

Differences Between Factory Guitars And Handmade Guitars

!±8± Differences Between Factory Guitars And Handmade Guitars

The guitar is one of the most popular musical instruments today. The guitar industry is huge, and includes everything from cheap guitars you can buy at discount stores to custom instruments that costs thousands of dollars. Many huge companies churn out guitars using a factory model and assembly-line production techniques, which allows them to bring down the cost of the guitars while still maintaining a certain quality. A custom guitar, on the other hand, is made once, usually by one individual luthier, who hand-picks the wood and creates a unique instrument every time.

There is no doubt that factory-made guitars cost less, and their quality depends on a number of factors. It's also true that custom guitars aren't necessarily great unless they are made by a talented luthier using good materials.

For example, wood selection is one of the most fundamental decisions that goes into the production of a guitar. Large companies buy wood in bulk and will set some level of standard for the parts that will be used for each guitar. But wood is not a uniform material, so even in factory guitars each one can be different and sound different depending on the density and the width of the grain present in the particular pieces of wood used in that guitar.

A custom luthier who knows what he is doing will hand-pick wood that will work for the type of guitar being built, to optimize the sound quality or control a particular tonal feature. You tend to not get this level of selection with factory guitars, so although they can sound different from each other, the differences are a product of coincidence rather than artful selection.

Let's say an acoustic guitar body is going to be made from a piece of swamp ash. As tonewood goes, swamp ash is a material with large, open pores and can have both hard and soft layers within each ring of the tree. The wood from the top part of the tree will be heavier and offer less brightness in the sound of the guitar than a softer piece from the bottom of the tree, whose open pores can produce a sweeter sound. In a factory setting, both woods may get used for the same model of the guitar, and you may have two very different sounding guitars - one bright, and one dead and lifeless. They may look exactly the same and end up hanging next to each other in a guitar shop!

A skilled and experienced luthier making the same type of guitar may select the wood more carefully, or, if they are using the wood that has more density, there are things they can do and choices they can make elsewhere in the construction of the instrument which can balance the sound to accommodate the harder wood. If they know how the wood reacts, they may turn its particular features into an asset for the instrument, whereas at the factory it will be a liability, its sonic fate given to chance and circumstance.

This is one of the main reasons why custom guitars cost money. It's the time, materials, and workmanship, in addition to the smart reasoning and choices that just don't get made enough in factory instruments.

Marfan syndrome is a disorder in the connective tissues of the body. Although not symptomatic, certain traits in such people include long hands and legs, eye problem, tapered fingers, or problems in the heart or eyes. The defect in the tissues result in their improper functioning and this can lead to death at any age.

This disorder was first described by a French pediatrician Antonie Marfan while its linked gene was identified by Francesco Ramirez. Some famous personalities with this disorder include:

Abraham Lincoln (1809 to 1865): He was a insatiable reader without formal education. He was outspoken against slavery and fought for president-ship as a nominee from the Republican Party. He was elected president in 1860. He died due to Marfan syndrome in 1865.

Mary Queen of Scots (1542 to 1587): As an heiress to the French throne, she ruled Scotland from 14 December 1542 to 24 July 1567. She was married to Francis in 1558. She suffered from Marfan syndrome and died by execution on charges of treason in 1587.

Niccolo Paganini (1782 to 1840): Born in Genoa, Italy, he was a renowned composer, violiniost and guitarist. He was initiated to playing mandolin at the age of 5 year. Later, he shifted his interest to violin and won numerous scholarships for the same. He died of Marfan syndrome on 27 May 1840.

Vincent Schiavelli (1948 to 2005): Born in Brooklyn, New York, he gained popularity for being a Hollywood actor and television star. He had Marfan syndrome. He worked voluntarily for the National Marfan Foundation, which helped people suffering from this disorder. He died of lung cancer in 2005.
